Project

The Maltings - Phase 1

Client : Pure Malt Products

Location : Haddington

The works comprised of the full external refurbishment and internal structural alteration to a 150 years old former Maltings Building and was the first phase of the buildings transformation to form modern welfare facilities, high quality office space and new laboratories.

Externally, extensive stone repairs were carried out and new windows were installed. The most challenging element of the external refurbishment works was the removal of two large existing roof structures and replacement to match the original design using modern roof trusses, slate and lead.

In addition to this we installed a new copper clad Pagoda on top of one of the new roof structures.

Internally, the building was taken back to a shell, which involved the removal of a large quantity of reinforced concrete walls used as part of the malting process. In addition to this, we replaced the five floors with new holorib and concrete floors. This work was carried out to a specific sequence to minimum the risk of any structural stress to the existing Cast Iron frame.

It was pleasure working with the Client and Design Team to restore this old building to it’s former glory.
